Elvis Presley’s Side-Splitting Christmas Prank on the Memphis Mafia

Elvis Presley, the quintessential King of Rock and Roll, had a mischievous side that came alive during the festive season.

One Christmas, he pulled a prank that left members of his inner circle, known as the Memphis Mafia, both stunned and amused.

It was a delightful twist on holiday gift-giving that showcased his playful spirit.

In a recent episode of a Gates of Graceland video series, archivist Angie Marchese recounted a memorable Christmas in 1972.

This was the year when Elvis decided to inject some humor into the holiday season after overhearing his staff discussing their Christmas bonuses.

Marchese elaborated, “For Elvis, the essence of Christmas was rooted in giving rather than receiving.

He relished the joy on his friends’ faces when he surprised them with gifts.” What could be better than putting a smile on your loved ones’ faces, right?

Elvis took it up a notch by heading to a nearby McDonald’s, where he purchased gift certificates worth just 50 cents each for his team.

It was all part of a cheeky plan to inject some fun into what was often a serious holiday expectation.

When he handed out these unexpected gifts, the looks of disbelief on his friends’ faces must have been priceless.

But it didn’t stop there; after the laughter, he proceeded to distribute generous bonuses to his staff, proving there was a heartwarming motive behind his prank.

Interestingly, this act of good-natured humor caught the attention of the local McDonald’s manager, who later sent Elvis a thank-you letter.

It praised him for his joke and expressed appreciation that, despite the nominal value of the certificates, he chose to treat his closest friends with a quality product. Talk about a classy touch!

Elvis was known for hosting extravagant holiday celebrations, and this spirit of roguish fun was just one element of the joy he spread during the festive season.

According to Danny Smith, Elvis’s cousin, the days leading up to Christmas were filled with laughter and revelry at Graceland with family and friends.

These celebrations often rolled into the early hours of Christmas morning, creating a vibrant and bustling atmosphere around the mansion.

After the festivities, the majority of his entourage would return home, leaving Elvis to cherish the day with Priscilla and later, Lisa Marie.

For Elvis, Christmas was a time for making cherished memories rather than accumulating gifts.

Danny humorously shared how family members typically presented Elvis with everyday items instead of extravagant presents.

“One year, we were thrilled to gift him a new recliner, which he actually used!” he recalled.

The holidays at Graceland were indeed a feast for the senses.

Elvis transformed his home into a winter wonderland, complete with sumptuous food, festive drinks, and an abundance of sweet treats, inviting everyone to indulge as much as they desired.

Decked out in vibrant red drapes and beautiful poinsettias, his home also boasted two extravagant Christmas trees—one in the dining room, adorned with traditional ornaments, and another sleek white tree in the living room, embellished with red baubles, adding a striking contrast.

Elvis made it a point to keep his decorations up through early January, allowing the festive atmosphere to linger until after his birthday on January 8th.

Christmas at Graceland wasn’t just a holiday; it was a grand celebration of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories that reflected the true spirit of the season.
